COncussion MANAGEMENT in San Antonio
WHAT IS concussion therapy?
For years, we used to think that a concussion was a brain bruise. When we were younger and bumped our heads we assumed a concussion injury was some sort of physical trauma to the brain. However, what we've learned, and our understanding now, is a concussion is not structural damage to the brain.
Structural damage to the brain falls under a different category known as TBI (or Traumatic Brain Injury). In TBI, you can have some brain damage.
A concussion is an injury to the brain, that doesn't always require impact.
So it can be that you've spun around real fast and the rotational forces cause it, where it changes the way that part of your brain works.
Ultimately, there's no complete answer for, “What is a concussion?”
Once we have that answer, we'll figure out how to diagnose it better, and how to treat it better and treat it more efficiently. Our doctors can work on getting you on the proper rehab, medication, or supplements to help you heal.
Causes of Concussions
A concussion isn’t always, but usually, a contact injury. Patients will come with typical stories of either playing a certain game or doing something and accidentally getting hit. The biggest complaint is generally a headache. More symptoms can range from confusion to dizziness, pain with bright lights, or loud noises that don't seem to go away or get worse if that stimulus is still there.
The causes of concussions may include:
Blows to the head
Violent shaking of the head
Falls
Collision
This is not a compressive list.
When consulting with our specialists, they will review your unique condition to help determine causes and treatment options to restore mobility and alleviate pain.
Common Misconceptions About Concussions
Some people think you just have to get a hit in the head to get a concussion, which, most of what we see is some type of trauma or accident hit to the head. You can get a shot to the body, and the forces that move your neck to your head can also cause a concussion.
Some Common Misconceptions:
A concussion happens only with a blow to the head.
Concussions are only caused by physical blows.
Every concussion should be treated the same.
Every concussion is the same.
The interesting thing about concussions nowadays is that we don't label them as mild, moderate, or severe concussions. It's either you get a concussion, you've got one, and you get diagnosed with one and you've got one. We don't label them anymore because every concussion—Even a concussion if somebody had more than one, every single one of them is different.
